The Cuban set to kick off Canadian Film Fest

In May of 2018, The County of Brant had the pleasure of hosting the fantastic cast and crew of “The Cuban”. Shot throughout several areas of Paris, the film will be making its nationwide debut this Thursday, May 21st at 9pm ET as part of the Canadian Film Fest presented by Super Channel.

The Canadian Film fest is an indie-spirited festival dedicated to celebrating Canadian filmmakers and this year for the first time will bring their festival to all Canadians with this virtual edition.

What’s The Cuban about?

Synopsis from the Cuban film website:

Luis is one of Mina’s most enigmatic patients – he has dementia and Alzheimer’s and spends his time in a wheelchair in a quiet corner of his room, retreated inside his own mind. To her surprise, Mina’s humming ignites a spark inside him and he begins to awaken. As each day passes, Luis reacts, reminisces, dances, and talks more and more. Their friendship blossoms – through his stories, Luis reveals his colourful past as a famous Cuban musician

Who does it star?

Louis Gosset Jr. as Luis: Familiar with the name? Louis Gosset Jr. is an Academy Award winner known for his role as Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley in the 1982 Hit, An Officer and a Gentleman. He’s also won Emmy’s for his role as Fiddler in the 1977 ABC Television miniseries Roots.

Ana Golja as Mina: Is a Canadian actress from Mississauga known for her role of Zoe Rivas in the hit TV series Degrassi: The Next Generation and Degrassi: The Next Class. Ana not only stars in the film but is also one of four producers!

Shoreh Aghdashloo: is an Iranian- American actress with an impressive resume of award winning roles. Her performance in House of Sand and fog in 2003 brought her several film critics’ awards and a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. In 2008 she won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a limited series or movie for her work in the HBO miniseries House of Saddam.

Lauren Holly: Is an American-Canadian actress who’s started in a number of classic movies and television series. She has played the roles of Deputy Sheriff Maxine Stewart in the tv series Picket fences, director Jenny Sheppard in the tv series NCIS and Dr Betty Rogers on Canadian tv series Motive. Movie fans might recognize her from playing Mary Swanson in Dumb and dumber, Linda Lee in Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, Cindy Rooney in Any Given Sunday or Gigi in What women want.

Giacomo Gianniotti: Is an Italian-Canadian actor. He studied college not far away from us – at Humber College. He has had recurring roles in the tv series Reign and Murdoch Mysteries. In 2015 he began his most popular role to date – as Dr Andrew DeLuca on Grey’s Anatomy.

Where was it filmed in Brant?

Scenes from the film were shot in local restaurant Paris Surf as well as on the streets of downtown Paris. Cast and crew also stayed at the The Arlington Hotel and frequented downtown shops and restaurants. It was quite the exciting day when Louis Gosset Jr. stopped by Wincey Mills to check it out!

The Cuban is an outstanding example of the quality of filming productions taking place in the County of Brant. The County of Brant Economic Development and Tourism team is currently undergoing a filming strategy with Optimus SBR consultants.

Please note, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, filming in the County of Brant is temporarily suspended until further notice.
